Lately, I have gotten really into creative projects like painting or fun DIY how-to’s to keep me occupied while spending so much time at home. A lot of us are in the same boat and are trying to find ways to be productive at home without just tuning out to the TV, so I created this easy Boho Tassel Wall Hanging DIY that can spruce up your space. This tutorial is super simple and can be done while watching Netflix in the background with a glass of wine in hand!

STEP ONE: PURCHASE WALL HANGING SUPPLIES
Lucky for you, it doesn’t take much to create this boho wall hanging! All you need is a few supplies from your local craft store and you’re set. I ordered all of my supplies online from Michael’s and was able to pick them up curbside or have them delivered. Check out my list of supplies below with direct links to everything I purchased for this DIY:
- 36′ x 0.5″ Wooden Dowel to create the base for hanging
- Crème Cotton Yarn in Cream to create the tassels. Purchase 3-4 for a 36″ Dowel.
- Embroidery Floss to wrap around the cotton yarn to add color and secure the tassels. You can get creative with the color-scheme of embroidery floss, but I recommend choosing 4-5 colors and purchasing 3-4 of each color. I choose a more neutral color palette with shades of beige, blush, rust and gold tones.
- Cotton Cord to securely hang the dowel onto the wall and to mix up the texture from the embroidery floss to secure the tassels.
- Scissors to cut the yarn, embroidery floss and cording.
STEP TWO: MEASURE THE YARN
Measure the yarn to create the tassels. You will want to measure different lengths of yarn to create variation in the tassel length for a layering effect. I measured my yarn at four different lengths between 12-36 inches. An easy way to measure several pieces of yarn at a time is by holding the yarn taught between your hands and continuously wrapping it from thumb to thumb to create large loops. Once you have made around 50-80 loops of yarn, you’ve created your first tassel and you’re on to the next step!
Pro Tip: Make sure to hold the yarn as tight as possible and to move your hands back and fourth in a see-saw motion for the easiest way to catch the yarn to create the continuous loops.
STEP THREE: CUT THE TASSEL
Now that you have measured your desired length and width of your tassel, cut the bottom loop in the middle. You will be able to trim this again once you have secured the top of your first tassel.
STEP FOUR: SECURE THE TASSEL
Secure your tassel with your colored embroidery floss by placing the top loop of your tassel around the wooden dowel and tying a knot at the top of the loop so that it is secured just below the dowel.
STEP FIVE: WRAP THE EMBROIDERY FLOSS
After securing the top knot, you will continue to wrap the embroidery floss around the yarn in a circular motion. The length at which you can wrap can vary, but I prefer to mix up my wrap lengths between 2-6 inches depending on the length of the tassel.
Once you have finished wrapping, cut the embroidery floss and create another knot at the bottom of your wrap to secure the tassel. After your tassel is complete, trim the bottom edges of your yarns to one even length.
REPEAT UNTIL YOUR WALL HANGING IS FILLED
Continue steps 2-5 until you have created around 25-30 tassels of varying lengths with different colored embroidery flosses and cording. You can get really creative with the placement and layering of the tassels and colors!
Note: This is a suggestion for a 36″ dowel. If you use a smaller dowel, you will create less tassels.
& VOILA!
Once you have created all of the tassels, use the cotton cord to loop around the ends of the wooden dowel and secure the cord to both ends by tying a knot. Make sure to give the cord some slack so that it hangs properly on a nail. It took me 3-5 hours to create my wall-hanging while watching TV!
Now, you have finished your first DIY Boho Tassel Wall Hanging and it’s time to style your home with your masterpiece! This adds some great flair to any room and can be put above a bed, a sofa or any blank wall space that needs a little bit of personality!
